International Temples Day

On the first Saturday in November, Kadampa Centers in over 40 countries celebrate the International Temples Project (ITP). This charity organization was founded by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso to further his vision that Kadampa Temples will appear in every major city in the world to bring about inner and outer peace.

International Temples Day provides a wonderful chance for Centers and individuals to review ITP activities from the previous year and to rejoice in their profound meaning. Some Centers hold special events and contribute proceeds to the project. Many schedule Offering to the Spiritual Guide prayers and make dedications for world peace, the aim of the ITP.

Venerable Geshe-la explained the importance of Kadampa Temples in this way:

‘According to Buddhist view, especially Mahayana Buddhist view, a Temple is a representation of Buddha’s Pure Land. Whoever sees a Temple or an image of Buddha receives the blessings of Buddha. There is no difference with regard to Buddhists and non-Buddhists – anyone, whenever they see an image of Buddha, or a Temple, receives special blessings. For these reasons I recommend building Temples as one of the best ways of benefiting other living beings … These holy, precious objects are the best public service.’

Ways to Help the ITP
If you love Kadampa Temples from your own experience, there are many enjoyable ways you can help the ITP continue. Contributing financially is just one, here are more: visit as many KMCs as you can, attend international Festivals, purchase an item from Tharpa Publications, offer a working visit, help with business and spiritual activities at your local center, make prayers and dedications.

Festival Retreat
The Festival ended at lunchtime, with two meditation sessions in the morning guided by Gen Eupame. These focused on mantra recitation, and then on the Medicine Buddha Prayer Venerable Geshe-la has prepared for us as a method to benefit others.
