Summer Festival Diaries 2009

Day 12 - Behind the Scenes

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, shared with us profound and beautiful instructions on the Yoga of Buddha Heruka.

Through training in self generation on the Heruka Body Mandala we can quickly attain enlightenment, permanent inner peace.

Geshe-la explained that the effectiveness of this practice depends upon our Sutra training. Comparing Tantra to a vehicle and Sutra to the four wheels of the vehicle, Geshe-la emphasised the importance of integrating Sutra and Tantra teachings in order for us to make progress along the spiritual path.

With great compassion Geshe-la highlighted how Sutra and Tantra is unified in the practice of Buddha Heruka. Geshe-la said without Sutra, Tantra has no function and without Tantra, Sutra has no goal.

Geshe-la explained that we need the meditation on emptiness to accomplish Tantric realizations and that with effort and familiarity we can work take the essence of our human life.

Behind the scenes
It is an extraordinary experience when Kadampas from all over the world gather and integrate both Festival activities and Dharma practise.

NKT Festivals are run entirely by volunteers from the enormous task of registering over 5,000 people with different requirements to recording the teachings, food preparation, cleaning, rubbish disposal, stage management for the Festival Play and First Aid. Everyone has the opportunity to join in and create a wonderful Festival.

All money raised from Festivals, or any NKT activity including Tharpa Publications is donated to the NKT International Temples Project, a non-profit Buddhist Organisation building for World Peace.

Review with Gen Kelsang Tonglam
National Spiritual Director of Asia, Gen Kelsang Tonglam led the review of Venerable Geshe-la’s teaching today.

Gen Tonglam emphasised Geshe-la’s point on the unification of Sutra and Tantra and how they mutually support each other to fulfil our final goal. Gen Tonglam impressed upon us the importance of maintaining a normal life and our spiritual development so that we lead a balanced life.

Quote of the day

If you realize your own mind you will become a Buddha.

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.
